Frequently asked questions

Straight answers about the catalog, what it costs, and how StreamAfri behaves on a real mobile connection.

What is StreamAfri?

StreamAfri is a streaming service for Ethiopian and Pan-African film, series, documentary, and artist-led live music sessions. It is built specifically for viewers watching on mobile phones and mobile data across Africa and the diaspora.

How much does StreamAfri cost?

StreamAfri is free while it is in beta. There is no subscription and no payment required. You only need a free account to start watching.

What can I watch on StreamAfri right now?

Part of the catalog is streaming now. Other titles are licensed and still being prepared, and are clearly marked 'Coming soon' on their pages. You can add any title to your list, including coming-soon titles, and it will be there when it becomes available.

Which languages does StreamAfri support?

The catalog is currently in Amharic and English. Subtitles are not available yet; subtitle support is planned and is one of the main gaps for a continent-wide catalog.

Does StreamAfri work on a slow connection?

Yes. Every title is encoded into a ladder that starts at 240p and 360p, and the player automatically picks the quality your connection can sustain, switching as the network changes. Higher tiers at 480p and 720p are used when the connection allows. This is a deliberate design choice for African mobile networks rather than an afterthought.

Which devices can I use?

StreamAfri runs in any modern mobile or desktop browser, including Android Chrome and iOS Safari. It can also be installed to your home screen as an app from the browser menu, which gives it a full-screen experience with its own icon.

Can I download titles to watch offline?

Not yet. Offline downloads are not available. StreamAfri needs a connection to stream, though your place in anything you were watching is saved and resumes when you come back.

How does StreamAfri get its content?

Titles come from signed agreements with the filmmakers, studios, and artists who made them. Performers and cast are credited on every title page their work appears on.

Does StreamAfri track me or run advertising?

There is no advertising on StreamAfri and no third-party analytics or advertising trackers in the product. The service stores the account you create, the titles you save, and how far through a title you have watched, which is what makes 'continue watching' work.

Is there a StreamAfri mobile app?

StreamAfri can be installed directly from your browser as a progressive web app today, on both Android and iOS. Native Android and iOS store apps are in progress.
